rougue maiden append

My maiden append.

Back in the ’80s and ’90s IBM operated an internal electronic forum (bulletin board). When you posted to a forum you were “appending” (yes, that was a verb) to a specific topical forum. The result of appending was an append. Your very first append was your “maiden append”. In honor of those early days of social networking, I dub this first blog post as my “maiden append”.

I’m not exactly sure what I’m doing here. Other than the occasional comment or diary on other blog sites, I have studiously avoided setting up my own blog. I’ve not wanted to be a slave to the regular update cycle.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about time and place. About how we are connected to each other through both time and place. I think about people past and present to whom I am connected. Some connections are by birth, others are by happenstance. Maybe this will be a place for me to write some things down about people and places. Significant (to me) and not so significant.

The recent passing of my brother, Gare, has been a trigger to building this site. I learned some things from Gare, in the last years of his life, about family. And about place. I’ll probably write about him some more as time goes by. But I might also write about other people, or places. Or distance memories.

If nothing else, this will be a place to write things down (well, sort of) and then I might know they have been kept. We’ll see.
